Moto G7 and G7 Power are latest mid-rangers from Motorola and run on Android 9 Pie out of the box. Both the devices are powered by Snapdragon 632 chipset and released in February, 2019. The G7 Power comes with whooping 5000mAh battery which nearly doubles the battery life. The next big update for these mid-rangers is Android 10.
Usually Motorola rolls out one major Android update for G series devices, so it seems that Android 10 will be the first and last major android update for G7 and G7 Power. Recently, many users are complaining about the slow software updates of Motorola.
Google released the last and sixth beta of Android 10 in August and the final version came out on September 3rd. The update hits Pixel series and Essential devices on the same day. Motorola starts the rollout of Android 10 with Moto One Power and Moto One Action devices recently and may spread to Moto G and Z series soon.

Moto G7 and G7 Power Android 10 Release Dates
Since Motorola is not participating in the Android Beta program, the Lenovo owned tech giant didn’t rollout any beta to any of its devices. So we think that the company will begin the developement after the official release of Android 10. Albeit, the rollout dates haven’t been announced for G7 and G7 Power, we can make and educated guess based on the history of rollout of the Pie update for G6 series, the predecessor of G7.
Motorola has begun the Android Pie rollout for G6 and G6 Play devices on July 17th, but unlocked variants received the update on July 26th. However, there are still some devices running on Android Oreo and waiting for Pie.
Because of Project Treble and other refinements, the rollout of Android 10 may begin sooner, according to tech experts. So, most likely the Lenovo tech giant will begin the Android 10 rollout for G7 and G7 Power devices in Q1 of 2020. We will post the official rollout dates here, as soon as Lenovo has announced them.
Update on 13/5/2020 :
According to Moto Brazil official site, the rollout of Android 10 has begun for G7 devices on May 7th, and the rollout should be completed by June 7th. A G7 user on Cricket Wireless reported that the device got the update. Some users reported that the update decreased the battery life of their devices. But as with any major updates, users may try with factory reset or clearing the cache to fix problems like these. We recommend users to go for factory reset only after doing the backup of the device.
Moto G7 Power is yet to receive the update, but we hope it isn’t far behind. Most probably Motorola will start the rollout in late-May 2020. The rollout of Android 10 for Moto G7 editions in India and Europe may also begin in late-May or early-June.
Update on 21/3/2020 :
The official rollout of Android 10 has spread to Moto G7 Plus devices in Italy and Canada, according to reports from users. The folks in Argentina, Chile, Australia received the update a few days ago. Most of the users reported no serious bugs in the update and if any can be fixed through a factory reset after updating to Android 10.
Motorola released the Kernel source of Android 10 for G7 into Github, so the developers can cook their own roms. However there is still no sign of the official update for G7 and G7 Power devices. The popular custom rom, LineageOS released the Android 10 update as Lineage OS 17.1 for G7 Power devices. So, interested users and developers on G7 Power can flash the Lineage OS 17.1 following the instructions on the official website. We recommend users to wait until the rollout of Android 10 OTA, because of serious risks with custom roms.
Update on 24/1/2020 :
Finally the rollout of Android 10 begins for Moto G7 series with the G7 Plus devices. Motorola starts delivering the stable update few hours ago to G7 Plus owners in Brazil and Mexico. Last week we heard some Brazilean users received the update as part of soak test. Now the Motorola Brazil support page for G7 Plus states that the stable rollout is progressing in phases.
It seems that the next Moto devices to receive the Android 10 are G7 and G7 Power. Most likely, in early or mid-February, the Lenovo-owned tech giant will start the rollout for these mid-rangers.
Android 10 Exclusive Features
The tenth Anniversary edition of Android came with many awesome features and improvements in many areas. Google tightened the Security of Android with storage encryption, support TLS 1.3, more secure Location sharing permissions, Project Mainline for critical updates and so on. Many security bugs of moderate severity have been fixed in the September 1st security patch.
Some of the notable features of Android 10 include Dark mode, Bubbles for multi-tasking, Focus mode and Perental Controls for Digital wellbeing, native support for Desktop mode, Full Gesture navigation etc.
Android users have been waiting for full system-wide dark mode for many years and now Google brings the feature with the latest iteration of Android. Samsung updated many of its flagships and mid-range devices to One UI, last year, which contains dark theme.
The dark theme in Android 10 also forces third-party apps to enable dark theme or changes colors automatically. So it reduce battery consumption and also eye strain. So Moto G7 and G7 Power users may experience durable battery life after updating to Android 10.
The Android 10 comes with full gesture navigation feature which contains navigation bar with only home button of small bar through which Gestures can be drawn. The Back sensitivity can be adjusted by tapping on the gear icon against the Gesture navigation option in Settings menu. If user don’t like the new navigation, he can revert back to old style navigation too.
Native Support for Desktop mode
Many flagships like Galaxy Note 10 and S10 support desktop mode through Samsung Dex but Android 10 comes with native support for Desktop mode. So even mid-range devices like G7 and G7 Power may support desktop mode after upgrading to Android 10. After enabling Desktop mode, users can use the device similar to Windows PC using custom Desktop launchers for Android.
New Emoji Collection
The Tenth anniversary iteration of Android arrived with about 236 new Emojis and about 800 refined emojis, of these about 300 gender-neutral ones. The Moto G7 and G7 Power users will observe new gender neutral emojis on Keyboard after receiving the Android 10 update. However, users can select gender specific ones by long tapping on the emoji icon.
The new accessibility emojis include hearing aids, mechanical arms, persons in wheel chairs and so on. The new animal emojis are orangutan, otter, skunk, flamingo, oyster, and guide dogs. Many interesting food emojis like garlic, onions, waffles, falafel, butter, a beverage box and Ice Cube also included in this update.
Focus mode and Parental Controls for Digital Wellbeing
The Search Giant brought the Digital wellbeing feature with the Android 9 Pie update to prevent smartphone addiction and promote healthy usage. This time, Google improved the feature with the addition of Focus mode and Parental controls.
Using Focus mode, users can stop notifications from specific apps like Facebook, Whatsapp while concentrating on work on smartphone or watching any videos. It is already proven that constant hitting of notifications lead to stressful life. So by turning-on the Focus mode, G7 and G7 Power users can get stress-free life.
Parental Controls is another feature to prevent smartphone addiction in children. Parents can set screen-on time, specific app usage time limit and also lock certain apps for their children.
Easy Wi-Fi sharing
In Android 10, Google introduced a new way to share Wi-Fi network to nearby devices without entering password manually. After receiving the Android 10 update, the Moto G7 users can share Wi-Fi network to their friends or nearby devices with just creating a QR code and scanning of it.
The users go to Settings > Networks & Internet > Wi-Fi and select the required network in the list of networks and tap on the share option to create QR code. Then, the other device can connect to the network by simply scanning the QR code in the Camera app.
Battery Saver Schedule
The Android 10 update is come with many AI associated refinements for Moto G7 and G7 Power devices. Automatic Schedule for Battery saver is among one of those. The feature itself turns-on and off the Battery saver according to user’s needs.
After updating to Android 10, Moto G7 users can enable it by going into Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Battery Saver Schedule and tap on Based on Your routine option. Then, ths feature begins to analyze the user’s phone usage and charging patterns and automatically manages the battery saver and improves battery life without disturbing user experience.
Native Support for TLS 1.3
The Tenth iteration of Android comes with native support for TLS 1.3 security protocol. So apps showing webview and for communication with their servers can use TLS 1.3 protocol which is faster and more secure than the previous TLS 1.2.
The TLS 1.3 protocol uses zero round-trip time feature which reduces latency drastically in SSL connections over https in Internet. The protocol support already came to Google Chrome and Firefox browsers and now comes to stock android with Android 10. So Moto G7 and G7 Power users can get faster and safer app experience after installing the Android 10 update.
The Android 10 update features Smart reply which is an improvement over quick replies in Android 9 Pie. The features works on Pixel devices as follows : when a message arrives in messaging apps like Signal, Google Messages or Whatsapp, Smart reply will analyze the message using on-device machine learning and shows appropriate replies or actions. It even shows emoji in its replies to make them more human like, rather than artificial.
When a message with location data or address arrives, the feature display a launch option to Maps below the message in notification, so that user don’t have to copy and paste the address to Maps app. Since Smart reply uses on-device processing power, there is no transmission of data to Google servers, so no privacy risks.
Dirty USB Port Notifications
Android 10 has a feature to disable the USB port, if it becomes dirty or contaminated, according to the folks over XDA. So the Moto G7 and G7 Power users will be shown notifications of disabled USB port, if the device USB port contaminated or damaged. The feature automatically re-enables the port, once the user cleans the port and there is an option to enable manually after cleaning the port.
Android 10 also monitors the temperature of USB port and warns if the cable get overheated. The threshold temperature of the critical status is 60°C. The dailog box closes only when the user unplugs the charger.
The Search giant revealed more details about the Live Captions feature in the third beta of Android 10 Q at Google I/O 2019 in May. The feature works with all supported audio, video playing apps and live calls also. The live captions feature shows real-time transcripts in a box at the bottom of the screen. The box is movable, so user can move the captions anywhere throughout the screen.
After enabling the feature, users start seeing real-time transcripts processed using AI everywhere while playing a video or in Skype call. The feature not only for deaf and hard of hearing people but also useful for normal users. However, the feature is limited only for the Pixel lineup of devices, according to Google, because it uses enormous processing power to show real time trascription.
