Android 10 update for Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 : Rumour Roundup
The Xperia 1 is the successor of XZ3 and a flagship smart phone from Sony, launched in February at MWC 2019. The device sports 6.5 inch display, powered by Snapdragon 855 chipset and runs on Android 9 Pie out of the box.
The Xperia 10 is a mid-ranger sporting 6 inch screen and powered by Snapdragon 630. The device runs on Android 9 Pie out of the box. The next and first major update for these devices is Android 10.
The tenth anniversary iteration of Android comes out of beta on September 3rd. Google did extensive beta testing and Sony also participated in the Beta program and rolled out Beta 3 to XZ3 in May.
When will Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 get Android 10 ?
The Japanese tech giant recently got speed with the rollout of updates to its flagships. Previously, Sony took nearly 67 days to develop the Android 9 Pie update for Xperia XZ2 and rolledout on October 12th. However, this time we expect Sony to finish the development early as both Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 pre-loaded with Pie, supported by Project Treble. So the tech giant might get finish the developement of Android 10 in 40-50 days and begin the rollout in Second or Third weeks of October for Xperia 1.
The Xperia 10 users might have to wait more time to taste the latest iteration of Android. Most likely, in the end of October or beginning of November, unlocked devices of Xperia 10 may start receiving the update. Carriers may begin the rollout for Xperia 1 and 10 in November and December 2019. We will post the official rollout schedule here, as soon as Sony has announced it.
Update on 14/5/2020 :
It seems that the long-awaited Android 10 rollout for Xperia 10 has begun Worldwide. Folks at XDA devs, discovered a post in Russian forum 4Pda, showing the Android 10 update notification and status.
The update version is 53.1.A.2.2 and size of the update is about 0.7 GB. The update carries March 1st security patch with it. The Xperia 10 users in Russia and European region with device model nos. I3213 and I4213 can download the update now by manually checking for OTA or wait until the OTA notification shows up.
Update on 18/12/2019 :
The Japanese tech giant kicks-off the stable rollout for Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 flagships on December 6th. Initially the rollout started in Japan, European countries and later expanded to the US unlocked devices and India. Still, some users haven’t got the update notification but they will get soon as the rollout takes place in phases.
The version number of the update is v55.1A.0.748 and it packs November month’s Security patch too. The major known issues till now are calls and mobile data function not working after updating and users not able to revert back to the previous android version. So we recommend all Xperia 1 users to back up their data before updating and reset the device after updating if any problem appears. Still the problem persists, users can contact the nearby Sony Service Centre for further assistance.
Update on 16/11/2019 :
Finally, Sony revealed some details about the rollout of Android 10 for its devices. According to the blog post, the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 flagships are scheduled to receive the update in December, 2019 and Xperia 10 will get the update in early 2020 along with other flagships.
The rollout seems to be delayed further for carrier-locked device users, according to the note in the post. However, compared to last year’s Pie rollout, this time the rollout is delayed, according to users and analysts. But we hope the update will be bug free, at least. We will post more details, as soon as Sony announced the rollout dates.
Android 10 : Exclusive Features
The Search giant revamped many things and introduced some notable features with the Android 10 update. Some of the new features of Android 10 update includes Bubbles, Smart Reply, Live captions, System-wide dark mode, Charging port clean notifications and so on. The refinements to existing features are Digital Wellbeing is enriched with the addition of Parental Controls and Focus mode and Navigation refined with Full Gesture navigation without navbar. The Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 users will get a new gender-neutral redesigned emoji set along with many new animal emojis. Now we will review the key features of the Android 10 update.

System-wide Dark mode
The Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 devices running on Pie contains some dark mode elements like Quick Settings and navbar. But, the Android 10 update is coming with full system-wide dark mode and the system automatically enables or apply dark mode in third-party apps too.
Users can enable dark mode going into Settings > Display > Theme or simply enable Battery saver in Quick Settings. Because of dark theme, there will be not only reduction of Eye strain but also increase in battery life. The battery life improvements are more noticeable on Xperia 1 flagship which sports OLED display but we expect considerable improvements on Xperia 10 too.
Improved Digital Wellbeing
Google introduced the Digital Wellbeing feature in Android 9 Pie addressed to reduce smart phone addiction and potential eye problems. The Android 10 update includes Parental Controls and Focus mode components for Digital Wellbeing which can be accessed through Dashboard.
Using Parental controls, users can limit their kids smart phone usage by setting timer for screen-on time, specific app usage time and even lock some apps. Focus mode is to create distraction-free environment when user trying to concentrate on some thing on the device or watch a movie without interruptions. Focus mode stops notifications temporarily from appearing, so users can concentrate without checking them constantly.
Android 10 Bubbles
Google introduced several ways to multi-task in earlier android updates, like Split screen, Picture in Picture mode and in Android 10 : Bubbles. The Bubbles features work similar to that of Facebook’s chatheads. The app shortcut icons on homescreen show small bubbles through which user can chat continuously on Whatsapp and apps while watching videos or browsing web.
Full Gesture navigation
Google introdeced the Gesture navigation feature in Android 9 Pie and refined it further in Android 10 with more gestures and complete removal of navbar. So in Android 10, there is only a small bar like home icon on the buttom of the screen and using gestures users can navigate around the system.
Users can adjust Back sensitivity by going into Settings>Navigation tap on the gear icon against the Full Gesture navigation option. If user don’t like the new navigation, he can revert back to old navigation with navbar and Back, Overview buttons.
The Android 10 update brings the smart reply feature which is very much useful to users while multi-tasking and to give quick replies. The feature also works to launch relevent apps with just a single tap. For example when the user received a message containing address to a location, then along with the message, a shortcut to launch Maps app also appear below the message. So the user can launch the Maps app and navigate to there with just a single tap without going to messages.
The text messages also appear with some optimized quick replies based on machine-learning. The replies even contain emojis, some times. So users can send replies without launching messaging apps, typing manually and so on.
Battery Saver Schedule
The Android 10 updates feature Battery saver schedule which manages switching-on and off the battery saver itself. The Xperia 1 and 10 users can enable the feature after receiving the Android 10 update. To enable it, users go into Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Battery Saver Schedule and change to on Based on Your routine.
Then, the feature starts analyzing the user’s usage behaviour and charging patterns and enables battery saver whenever necessary. The feature may get refined further in upcoming updates.
