Android 10 for Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 : Exclusive Features and Release Date
Sony launched the Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 flagships in August and February 2018 respectively, both flagships are powered by Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform. The Xperia XZ3 arrived with Android 9 Pie out of the box while XZ2 came with Android 8.0 Oreo and later received the Pie update. The next major update for both the flagships is Android 10.
Google released the sixth-cum-last beta of Android 10 with final system behaviours on August 8th and the official version of Android 10 arrived on September 3rd with September 1st security patch.
Before the rollout, Google announced in the official Android blog, the latest Android update is called as 10 without any codename. So, finally, an end comes for the tradition of naming Android versions after desserts.
Android 10 Q Release Dates for Xperia XZ2 and XZ3
Google released the third Beta at I/O 2019 in May and announced that along with Pixel series, other flagships like Xperia XZ3, LG G8 ThinQ and One Plus also receive the Beta. The registered Xperia XZ3 users got the Beta version of Android Q, but it was not suitable as daily driver because of lack of stability and some Exclusive Xperia features. So the users are waiting for the official version of Android 10.
Previously, Android 9 Pie officially came out on August 6th, 2018 and Sony began the rollout for XZ2 devices on October 12th. So the Japanese tech giant took about 67 days to rollout the update. Since, the official version of Android 10 arrived on September 3rd, we expect the rollout of Android 10 will begin for Xperia XZ3 series in the first or second weeks of November. Because of Project Treble and other refinements, the rollout may even begin earlier than we anticipated.
If we look at Xperia XZ2 case, it will receive the Android 10 update soon after XZ3. Last year, the Xperia XZ1 devices received the Android Pie update on 11th November, 2018, albeit the tech giant promised the rollout would begin on October 26th. So Sony took nearly 98 days to rollout the update. Based on that, we can expect Xperia XZ2 device users will get the Android 10 update notifications in the second or third weeks of December.
A famous Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo recently revealed a list containing smartphones which is going to receive the Android 10 upgrade. In the list, we find all Sony flagships along with XZ2 and XZ3, but unfortunately, XZ1 is absent. However, Sony may add it in the second phase of upgrade.

Android 10 Q Features :
The tenth anniversary edition of Android arrived with many remarkable new features and refinements. The key features of Android Q include System-wide dark mode, improved Privacy options, Parental controls for Digital wellbeing, Bubbles, Focus mode, Smart reply and so on. Now we will dig inside the Android 10 update :
Android 10 Dark mode :
The next major android update for Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 flagships is coming with native dark mode which was designed carefully. So the dark mode in the last beta of Android 10 appears nearly bug free. Not only stock android apps, third party apps also show dark theme, when user enables force dark mode. However, most of the app developers updated their apps with their own dark themes.
Using dark mode is easier for eyes and battery too. So we recommend Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 users to enable system-wide dark mode after upgrading to Android 10.
Parental controls for Digital Wellbeing
Last year, Google released Digital wellbeing app with Android 9 to stop and prevent smartphone addiction in Android users. In Android 10, the Search giant improved the feature and added Parental controls which reduce the kids addiction to phone. Using parental controls, Android users can limit the screen-on time, specific app usage time and block some apps for their children.
Constant notifications from various apps especially Messaging apps has become problem today, because it distracts the user from his/her work. If the user is working on something on the device, notifications from specific apps can be blocked by using the Focus mode feature in Android 10.
Focus mode can be accessed in the Digital Wellbeing app and set for wanted apps. After enabling the focus mode, user can disable it quickly through the shortcut created or Quick Settings toggle.
The tenth anniversary edition of Android contains 236 new emojis including refined gender-neutral emojis. The new animal emojis include organtuan, otter, skunk, flamingo, oyster, and few versions of guide dogs while new food emojis are garlic, onions, waffles, falafel, butter, a ‘beverage box’ and an ice cube. Mechanical arms, hearing aids, wheal chair and other new emojis are also came with the Android 10 update.
More than 300 existing emojis redesigned to gender-neutral in Android 10. Some of the remarkable gender neutral emojis are Police officer, Women getting hair cut and so on. Some of the blob emojis are still remained which are already gender-neutral.
Battery saver schedule
Google made many remarkable refinements to the Battery saver feature in the past few updates and so the battery life improved drastically. In the tenth anniversary edition of Android, the search giant added a bit of AI to the Battery saver to make it better and improve user experience.
Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 users can enable the option by going into Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Battery saver schedule > tap on Based on Your routine. Then users can completely forget about managing the Battery saver of Android. The feature itself analyze the user’s bahaviour, charging patterns using AI associated with On-device machine learning and enables or disables the saver automatically.
Native Desktop mode
Desktop mode is a utility to get a whole new Android experience on bigger screens like Monitors and TVs by connecting the device to the screen with cable. Currently only some flagships like Samsung Galaxy Note and S series support it through custom Dex mode. Now it is coming to Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 devices with the Android 10 update.
Using native desktop mode support and custom launchers, users can use the device similar to a windows PC. Multi-tasking will get more easy and users can do many productive tasks.
Android 10 Bubbles
Bubbles is one of the awesome features of Android 10. The Xperia XZ3 and XZ2 users can do messaging directly from the homescreen or while using other apps. The feature brings new multitasking experience, as it allows users to chat while using other apps in the remaining real estate.
For example, when a message arrives while using other apps or browsing web, user can reply quickly using the bubbles feature. The feature works similar to Facebook’s chat heads feature. Google may refind the feature further in later updates.
Update on 4/9/2019 :
The Search Giant begins the rollout of the Android 10 update for its Pixel series devices on September 3rd, as leaked earlier. The Android 10 source code is now available in AOSP (Android Open Source Project), so custom rom developers can cook their own roms based on the source code. Along with Pixels, One Plus and Essential begins the rollout for their devices.
However, we haven’t heard any news regarding the rollout of Android 10 from Sony. We expect that the Japanese tech giant will announce about Android 10 for its devices soon.
